Happy Earth Day! Trees are a key factor in our survival and the survival of the planet. Trees have many beneficial effects on the plant and on us. Here are some benefits of trees:

1) Trees improve air quality.

Sometimes called the “lungs of the Earth”, trees absorb and filter pollutants through their leaves which removes contaminants in the air. They also produce oxygen through photosynthesis.

2) Trees improve water quality, and prevent flooding and erosion.

A tree’s canopy catches precipitation before it reaches the ground, allowing some of it to gently drip and the rest to evaporate. The tree roots hold soil in place, reducing erosion which can lessen the force of storms and reduce the amount of runoff into sewers, streams, and rivers.

3) Trees temper climate.

Trees lower air temperatures and humidity; they can also influence wind speed. Evaporation of water from trees, or transpiration, has a cooling effect. Trees in parking lots have been shown to reduce asphalt temperatures by 36 degrees Fahrenheit and car interiors by up to 47 degrees Fahrenheit.

4)Trees create habitats for animals.

Wherever trees are established, wildlife and other plants are sure to follow, ensuring a healthier ecosystem. Trees provide shelter and food for a variety of birds and small animals.

5) Trees reduce noise pollution and can serve as screens.

A line of trees 50 feet tall for 100 feet can reduce highway noise by up to 10 decibels, reducing the sound volume by half. Densely planted trees can also block unsightly views.

Trees also provide health benefits for us, especially in urban cities. Being around trees reduces blood pressure, making us feel calmer and less stressed. Research has shown that as little as 3-4 mins in a leafy environment has a positive effect.

Studies have even shown that a tree-lined street can have a calming effect on people with ADHD. They’re also linked to lower blood pressure overall. Tree-lined streets are simply more pleasant to live on and visit. In fact, increased tree cover has been linked to lower rates of obesity and being overweight. Reasons for is is because you are more likely to go out for a walk or participate in physical activity when there are more trees in the area. Even when we can’t get outside, just looking out onto a leafy green street is good for us. Studies have shown that workers who can see nature from their desks take 23% less time off sick than those who can’t, and also report greater job satisfaction.

You can see the importance of trees and you must understand the importance of their health. Whether you do it yourself or hire an arborist, it is important that you make sure you take care of the trees on your property to help maintain their health!
